The theme for International Anti Corruption Day 2021 is ‘Your right, your role: Say no to corruption’, reinforcing the prevention is a shared responsibility.
This year the emphasis is on the rights and responsibilities of everyone in tackling the problem, as well as the need for policies, systems and measures to be in place for people to be able to speak up and say no to this crime type. A culture of integrity and fairness is created through institutions having effective, accountable and transparent measures.
Transparency International, the global coalition against corruption, released the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) report. The CPI report ranks 180 countries and territories based on their perceived levels of public-sector corruption. For the first time in almost 20 years, Australia has not been ranked in the top ten countries effectively dealing with corruption, coming in at number 11 in 2020.
Dedicated Anti Corruption Agencies
Each Australian State and Territory has a dedicated integrity agency to combat corruption. These are:
- New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption
- Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission
- Western Australian Corruption and Crime Commission
- Tasmanian Integrity Commission
- Victorian Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission
- South Australian Independent Commission Against Corruption
- Office of the Independent Commission against Corruption Northern Territory
- The Commonwealth also has the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity.
Anti Corruption Recommendations
A key recommendation to address the problem is to strengthen audit and oversight institutions. Audit and anti corruption agencies need to remain independent and properly resourced and equipped to perform their duties.
